So much of healing is finding the support and care that works for us, and yet we aren’t taught how to find and advocate for that care.

In fact, complex trauma often teaches us the exact opposite: that we aren’t worthy of responsive, consensual, and collaborative support; that we aren’t allowed to ask for what we need; that we are burdensome for needing support; that we should settle for what is offered even if it doesn’t meet our needs; that we aren’t allowed to ask questions; that we don’t know ourselves well enough to direct our healing; that we need to look to others to tell us how to “fix” ourselves; and more. While these messages can feel incredibly persuasive (I believed them myself at one time), they aren’t true.
